I decided to do a little research when choosing my practice location and see what sort of help there is out there for anxiety, before I settled on my current location. I thought I would share my thought process with you here...
After several attempts to find any form of help it very quickly became obvious that lots of help is available in the city. Great! If you live there, but what about the rest of Norfolk ? I don't know about you but the thought of driving into the city at any given time induces a cold sweat! And don't get me started about parking! It seems that help is available but first you must run the gauntlet of city driving. Don't get me wrong, I am a very good driver and can hold my own when it comes to lane changing, road works etc. Hell I'm even getting good at the game called 'let's guess what the hell the driver in front is doing?' You know the one ;-)
But if you struggle with anxiety, whether it's about going out, open spaces, crowded areas, city driving, social interaction etc, a trip into the city can be a BIG issue! In fact massive. I then thought about how great it must be to arrive and spend some quality time with help, but wait....I've still got to get home! The more I thought the more I saw the whole process a little bit like this:
Feel high anxiety, get in car. Feel more anxiety, drive into city. Feel ready to panic and now find a car parking space. Ok, panic! Late now. Shit! People everywhere! Don't make eye contact and walk fast. Finally find office. Relax...oh bollocks, I can't! That's why I'm here! Have session.....WOW feel great! Leave office. Shit! People! Don't make eye contact, find car, feel nervous. Drive car, anxiety rising. Fight way home...roadworks! Mr angry behind me waving his fist....argh!! Panic!!! Get, home and sit down. Job done!
Strangely, having looked at it through the eyes of my clients, I chose a nice quiet location in Dereham. Oh..and the parking space is always free for you.
