Can Hypnotherapy Help You Change Long-Term Habits?

Understanding how automatic habits can be changed

Long-term habits can be difficult to change because they often become automatic. A particular situation, emotion or environmental cue can trigger a familiar behaviour before you have consciously decided what to do.
For example, stress may automatically trigger eating, boredom may trigger scrolling on your phone, or certain situations may trigger smoking, drinking or another habitual response.
Hypnotherapy can help explore the emotional and psychological associations connected with a habit. The aim is to help you become more aware of triggers and develop alternative responses.
However, sustainable habit change usually requires more than hypnosis alone. Repetition, environmental changes and practising new behaviours are all important.
A useful question is not simply “How do I stop this habit?” but “What purpose has this habit been serving?”
If a behaviour provides comfort, distraction, stimulation or relief from stress, finding healthier ways to meet that underlying need can make change much more sustainable.
