What Happens in the Nervous System?

Your nervous system is your body's internal communication network. It constantly gathers information from your surroundings, your thoughts and your body to decide one important question:

"Am I safe?"

Every second of every day, your brain receives millions of pieces of information. Most of this happens automatically without you being aware of it.

When your brain believes you are safe, your nervous system stays in a calm, balanced state. Your breathing is steady, your heart beats normally, your digestion works efficiently, your immune system functions well and you are able to think clearly, make decisions and enjoy life.

However, if your brain detects a potential threat—whether it's a real danger, a stressful situation or even a worrying thought—it activates your survival response. Stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are released, preparing your body to protect you.

This response is incredibly useful if you genuinely need to escape danger. Unfortunately, modern life often triggers the same survival system through deadlines, financial worries, relationship problems, health concerns or persistent anxious thoughts.

When the nervous system spends too much time in survival mode, you may begin to experience symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety

  • Panic attacks

  • Poor sleep

  • Muscle tension

  • Digestive problems

  • Brain fog

  • Fatigue

  • Irritability

  • Feeling constantly "on edge"

The encouraging news is that the nervous system is highly adaptable. Through approaches such as relaxation, healthy lifestyle habits, mindfulness, breathing exercises, hypnotherapy and talking therapy, it can learn to spend more time in a calm, regulated state.

Understanding Anxiety: Why Your Body Reacts Before Your Mind Understands - Fight, Flight and Freeze

The fight, flight and freeze response is your body's built-in survival system. It has helped humans stay alive for thousands of years by preparing us to respond quickly to danger.

When your brain detects a threat, it automatically activates your sympathetic nervous system.

Your body releases adrenaline and cortisol, causing a number of physical changes:

  • Your heart beats faster.

  • Breathing becomes quicker.

  • Blood is redirected to your muscles.

  • Your senses become more alert.

  • Digestion slows down.

  • Your muscles tighten in preparation for action.

Depending on how your brain interprets the situation, you may experience one of three common responses:

Fight: You feel ready to confront the danger.

Flight: You feel an overwhelming urge to escape or avoid the situation.

Freeze: You feel stuck, unable to move or think clearly. This is a protective response and is just as normal as fight or flight.

Although these reactions are designed to keep you safe, they can become overactive in people experiencing anxiety. Everyday situations such as driving, public speaking, shopping or social events may trigger the same survival response, even though there is no real danger.

The good news is that the nervous system can learn new patterns. Therapy, relaxation techniques and hypnotherapy can help reduce unnecessary survival responses and teach your brain that these situations are safe.

Why Panic Attacks Feel So Frightening

A panic attack is a sudden surge of the body's survival response. Although the experience can feel overwhelming, it is not usually dangerous.

During a panic attack, your brain mistakenly believes you are in immediate danger and rapidly activates the fight, flight or freeze response.

This causes physical sensations such as:

  • A racing heart

  • Fast breathing

  • Sweating

  • Trembling

  • Chest tightness

  • Dizziness

  • Tingling sensations

  • Feeling detached or unreal

These symptoms can feel so intense that many people worry they are having a heart attack or losing control.

In reality, the sensations are caused by adrenaline preparing your body to deal with a threat.

One of the reasons panic attacks can continue is that people naturally begin to fear the sensations themselves. This fear can create a cycle where anxiety about having another panic attack increases the likelihood of experiencing one.

Understanding what is happening in the body, combined with appropriate therapeutic support and practical coping strategies, can help reduce the fear and break this cycle.

A Deeper Understanding: The Fight, Flight and Freeze Response

The fight, flight and freeze response is one of the oldest and most sophisticated survival systems in the human body. Long before our conscious mind has fully processed what's happening, our brain is constantly scanning the environment for signs of danger. This process happens automatically and largely outside of our awareness.

Your Brain's Internal Threat Detector

At the centre of this system is a small almond-shaped structure deep within the brain called the amygdala. Think of the amygdala as your brain's smoke alarm. Its job is not to determine whether something is definitely dangerous, but to quickly identify anything that might be a threat.

 

The amygdala works incredibly quickly. In many situations it can respond to potential danger before your conscious, thinking brain has had time to evaluate what is actually happening. This speed has helped humans survive throughout evolution because reacting first and analysing later was often safer than the other way around.

For example, if our ancestors heard a sudden rustle in long grass, assuming it was a predator—even if it turned out to be the wind—was far less risky than ignoring it.

The Role of the Sympathetic Nervous System

Once the amygdala detects a possible threat, it activates the sympathetic nervous system, the part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for preparing the body for action.

Within seconds, a cascade of biological changes begins.

The adrenal glands release adrenaline (epinephrine) and later cortisol, two hormones that prepare the body to survive.

These changes include:

  • Heart rate increases to pump more oxygen-rich blood around the body.

  • Breathing becomes faster to deliver additional oxygen.

  • Blood vessels supplying the muscles widen, allowing greater physical performance.

  • Digestion slows because it is not essential during immediate danger.

  • Pupils dilate to improve vision.

  • Blood sugar levels rise to provide rapid energy.

  • Muscles become tense and ready for movement.

  • Attention narrows so the brain can focus on the perceived threat.

Every one of these changes is designed to maximise your chances of survival.

Fight, Flight or Freeze?

Although we often talk about "fight or flight," modern neuroscience recognises several survival responses.

  • Fight prepares you to confront the threat. You may feel angry, determined or unusually confident.

  • Flight prepares you to escape. You may feel restless, agitated or experience a strong urge to leave the situation.

  • Freeze occurs when the brain decides that neither fighting nor escaping is likely to succeed. Instead, the body may become still, numb or unable to act. Many people describe feeling "stuck," unable to think clearly or even speak. Freeze is not weakness—it's an automatic survival strategy seen throughout the animal kingdom.

Some researchers also describe additional responses such as fawn, where a person attempts to reduce conflict by pleasing or appeasing others. This is more commonly discussed in the context of prolonged stress or trauma.

Why Anxiety Triggers the Same System

One of the fascinating aspects of the nervous system is that it responds to perceived danger, not just actual danger.

The brain does not always distinguish between:

  • A charging animal.

  • A difficult presentation at work.

  • An unexpected medical symptom.

  • A stressful email.

  • Financial worries.

  • A frightening memory.

  • An imagined worst-case scenario.

If the brain believes something threatens your safety, identity or wellbeing, it can activate the same biological survival response.

This explains why anxiety produces such real physical symptoms even when there is no immediate physical danger.

Why the Symptoms Feel So Real

Many people experiencing anxiety worry that something serious is happening because the physical sensations feel so intense.

In reality, these sensations are simply the body's emergency preparation system doing exactly what it evolved to do.

For example:

  • A racing heart is pumping blood to your muscles.

  • Rapid breathing increases oxygen availability.

  • Dizziness may occur because changes in breathing alter carbon dioxide levels in the blood.

  • Sweating helps cool the body if vigorous activity becomes necessary.

  • Muscle tension prepares you to move quickly.

  • "Butterflies" or nausea occur because digestion has temporarily slowed.

Although these sensations can feel frightening, they are usually signs of an activated nervous system rather than signs that something is seriously wrong.

When the Alarm Becomes Over-Sensitive

For some people, repeated stress, trauma or prolonged anxiety can make the nervous system more sensitive over time.

Imagine a smoke alarm that begins sounding every time someone burns a piece of toast.

Nothing dangerous is actually happening, but the alarm has become overly responsive.

The same thing can happen within the nervous system.

Everyday situations that are objectively safe—driving, shopping, public speaking or meeting new people—may begin triggering the body's survival response because the brain has learned to associate those situations with danger.

This does not mean anything is "wrong" with you. It means your nervous system has become highly protective.

Can the Nervous System Change?

Yes. One of the most encouraging discoveries in neuroscience is that the brain remains adaptable throughout life, a property known as neuroplasticity. Every time you repeatedly experience safety, practise relaxation, challenge anxious thinking or successfully face situations you once feared, your brain receives new evidence that those situations are not dangerous.

Over time, these repeated experiences help strengthen new neural pathways while reducing the brain's tendency to trigger unnecessary survival responses. Therapies such as hypnotherapy, talking therapy, mindfulness, breathing exercises and gradual exposure all work in different ways to support this learning process. Rather than simply suppressing symptoms, the aim is to help your brain update its predictions so it no longer reacts as though everyday situations are life-threatening.

 

Understanding how the fight, flight and freeze response works often provides reassurance in itself. Once you recognise that these sensations are the result of a highly protective nervous system—not a personal weakness—you can begin working with your brain instead of fearing what it is doing.

How the Subconscious Mind Works

  • Your subconscious mind is responsible for many of the automatic thoughts, behaviours and habits that happen without conscious effort.

  • While your conscious mind is logical and analytical, your subconscious stores memories, emotions, learned behaviours and beliefs developed throughout your life.

 

Think of it like this:

  • Your conscious mind is the driver.

  • Your subconscious is the vehicle's operating system.

Much of what you do every day happens automatically because your subconscious has learned familiar patterns. This includes brushing your teeth, driving a familiar route, reacting emotionally to certain situations and many of your daily habits.

The subconscious is always trying to protect you based on past experiences. Sometimes it does an excellent job. At other times it continues using outdated patterns that are no longer helpful, such as excessive worry, low confidence or unhealthy coping behaviours.

Hypnotherapy works by encouraging a deeply relaxed, focused state where helpful suggestions may be more readily accepted. This can support the process of replacing unhelpful patterns with healthier ones, while you remain aware and in control throughout the session.

How Hypnosis Affects Attention and Suggestion

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and deep relaxation. Despite common myths, it is not a form of mind control, and you remain aware and able to choose whether to accept suggestions.

During hypnosis, many people become less distracted by outside thoughts and more able to concentrate on helpful ideas, goals and mental imagery.

A Deeper Understanding:
How the Unconscious Mind Works

When people talk about the "unconscious" or "subconscious" mind, they're usually referring to the vast amount of mental processing that happens outside our conscious awareness.

Although the terms subconscious and unconscious are often used interchangeably in everyday language, modern psychology tends to use unconscious processing to describe the many mental functions that occur automatically without conscious effort.

Whatever term is used, one thing is clear: Your brain is doing far more than you are consciously aware of.

Scientists estimate that your brain receives millions of pieces of sensory information every second, yet your conscious awareness can only process a tiny fraction of it. If you had to consciously control every heartbeat, muscle movement, memory, emotion and decision, everyday life would be impossible.

Instead, your brain has developed sophisticated automatic systems that allow you to function efficiently.

Two Ways Your Brain Processes Information

One helpful way of understanding the mind is to think of it as operating through two interacting systems.

Conscious Processing

Your conscious mind is the part you experience directly.

It allows you to:

  • Think logically.

  • Make deliberate decisions.

  • Solve problems.

  • Plan ahead.

  • Analyse information.

  • Focus your attention.

  • Learn new skills intentionally.

However, conscious processing has limited capacity. It can only focus on a small number of things at once.

Unconscious Processing

Beneath conscious awareness lies an extraordinary network of automatic processes.

Your unconscious mind continually:

  • Regulates breathing.

  • Controls heart rate.

  • Maintains body temperature.

  • Coordinates movement.

  • Stores memories.

  • Recognises familiar faces.

  • Detects emotional signals.

  • Predicts future events.

  • Learns patterns.

  • Automates behaviours.

  • Monitors your surroundings.

  • Influences decisions.

  • Generates emotional responses.

Remarkably, much of this happens without any conscious effort.

Your Brain Is a Prediction Machine

One of the biggest discoveries in modern neuroscience is that the brain is not simply reacting to the world—it is constantly predicting it. Instead of waiting for information to arrive, the brain continually asks:

"What do I expect to happen next?"

It compares incoming information with memories, previous experiences and learned expectations. This process allows you to react incredibly quickly.

For example:

When driving home, you often arrive without remembering every turn you made.

When reading a sentence, you recognise entire words rather than individual letters.

When someone smiles at you, you instantly recognise the emotion.

These automatic predictions save enormous amounts of mental effort.

The Brain Loves Patterns

Your brain evolved to recognise patterns because recognising patterns helped humans survive.

If something repeatedly happened together, the brain began linking them.

For example:

Dark clouds → Rain

Red traffic light → Stop

Smell of smoke → Possible fire

These associations are incredibly useful.

However, the same learning mechanism also creates emotional patterns.

For example:

Embarrassment at school → Speaking in public feels dangerous.

Panic attack while shopping → Shopping becomes associated with fear.

Stress after work → Chocolate provides comfort.

Repeated criticism → Feeling "I'm not good enough."

The brain doesn't ask whether these associations are true.

It simply learns:

"This happened before, so I'll prepare for it again."

Memory Is Not Like a Video Recording

Many people imagine memories being stored exactly as events happened.

In reality, memory is much more dynamic. Every time you remember something, your brain actively reconstructs that memory using:

  • Facts.

  • Emotions.

  • Beliefs.

  • Expectations.

  • Current mood.

  • Later experiences.

This is one reason two people can remember the same event very differently.

Your unconscious uses these stored experiences to predict what may happen in the future.

Your Emotional Brain Works Faster Than Your Thinking Brain

Imagine you're walking through long grass. Something suddenly moves near your foot. Before you've consciously recognised what it is, your body may already have jumped backwards.

This happens because sensory information can reach the brain's threat-detection systems extremely quickly. Only afterwards does your thinking brain evaluate the situation.

"Oh...it was only a stick."

This rapid processing helps explain why anxiety often feels automatic.

The body reacts first.

Thinking comes second.

Automatic Behaviours Save Mental Energy

Imagine having to consciously think about every movement involved in:

Walking.

Typing.

Driving.

Making tea.

Brushing your teeth.

Life would be exhausting. Instead, repeated behaviours become automatic through learning.

The brain strengthens frequently used neural pathways until they require very little conscious effort.

This process is called automaticity.

The same mechanism that allows you to drive effortlessly can also create unwanted habits such as nail biting, emotional eating or excessive worrying.

The Brain Learns Through Repetition

Neuroscientists often summarise learning with the phrase:

"Neurons that fire together wire together."

Every time you repeat a thought, behaviour or emotional response, the connections between involved nerve cells become stronger. The more often those pathways are activated, the easier they become to use.

This is why:

The more you practise a skill...

...the easier it becomes.

Unfortunately, the same principle also applies to anxiety.

  • Repeated worrying strengthens worrying pathways.

  • Repeated avoidance strengthens avoidance pathways.

  • Repeated reassurance seeking strengthens dependence on reassurance.

  • Fortunately, the opposite is also true.

  • Repeated calm experiences strengthen calm pathways.

  • Repeated confidence strengthens confidence.

  • Repeated success strengthens self-belief.

Why Old Habits Feel So Automatic

Once a behaviour becomes deeply learned, the brain naturally prefers it because it requires very little energy. This doesn't mean change is impossible. It simply means that your brain is trying to use the most familiar pathway available. Creating lasting change involves giving the brain repeated opportunities to build new pathways until they gradually become the preferred route.

How Hypnosis Fits Into This Picture

Hypnosis is often described as a state of focused attention combined with reduced awareness of unnecessary distractions. During hypnosis, many people become deeply absorbed in their thoughts, mental imagery or the therapist's words.

This focused state may make it easier to:

  • Explore established patterns.

  • Rehearse new ways of thinking.

  • Strengthen motivation.

  • Build emotional resilience.

  • Increase confidence.

  • Develop healthier habits.

Importantly, hypnosis is not about surrendering control or having your mind taken over. Research shows that people generally remain aware of their surroundings and retain the ability to reject suggestions that conflict with their values or wishes.

Rather than "reprogramming" the mind, hypnotherapy works best as a collaborative process. It combines focused attention, meaningful therapeutic suggestions and repeated practice to support the brain's natural ability to learn and adapt.

Your Brain Is Designed to Change

Perhaps the most encouraging discovery in neuroscience is that your brain remains capable of change throughout your life. This ability is known as neuroplasticityEvery new experience, every skill you learn and every healthier response you practise creates opportunities for your brain to strengthen new neural connections.

The unconscious mind is not fixed. It is constantly learning from your experiences.

With the right support, repetition and practice, the patterns that once kept you stuck can gradually be replaced with patterns that help you feel calmer, more confident and more in control.

This is why lasting change is possible.

Not because your brain is broken—but because your brain was built to learn.

Hypnotherapists often use the terms subconscious or unconscious to describe many of these automatic processes, while acknowledging that neuroscience uses different terminology.

Why Habits Form

Habits are your brain's way of saving energy. Every time you repeat a behaviour, your brain strengthens the connections associated with that action. Eventually the behaviour becomes automatic, allowing you to perform it with little conscious thought. Most habits follow a simple pattern:

Cue → Behaviour → Reward

For example:

  • Feeling stressed (cue)

  • Eating chocolate (behaviour)

  • Feeling temporarily better (reward)

Over time, your brain begins to expect the reward whenever the cue appears.

The good news is that habits are not permanent. The brain remains capable of change throughout life, a quality known as neuroplasticity. Changing habits usually works best by identifying the trigger, understanding the reward the behaviour provides and creating a healthier alternative that meets the same underlying need. This process takes practice, repetition and patience, but lasting change is possible.

What Happens in Your Brain During Stress?

During stress, your brain shifts into survival mode, activating systems designed to keep you safe. The amygdala—the brain’s alarm centre—fires first, signalling that something feels threatening. It then alerts the hypothalamus, which triggers a cascade of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These chemicals sharpen focus, heighten vigilance, and prepare your body for action, but they also pull resources away from areas linked to calm thinking, emotional balance, and long‑term decision‑making. As the prefrontal cortex (the part responsible for reasoning and perspective) becomes less active, you may feel more reactive, overwhelmed, or unable to switch off. This is why stress can make small problems feel huge and why your mind can race even when the danger isn’t physical.

How the Nervous System Affects Emotional Regulation

The nervous system plays a central role in emotional regulation because it determines how quickly you react, how intensely you feel, and how easily you return to calm. When your nervous system senses safety, the parasympathetic branch helps you stay grounded, think clearly, and process emotions in a balanced way. But when it detects stress or threat, the sympathetic system takes over, speeding up your heart, tightening your muscles, and narrowing your focus. In this activated state, emotions feel bigger, sharper, and harder to manage. If your nervous system stays stuck in high alert, even small triggers can feel overwhelming. Why You Can't "Just Stop Worrying"

You can’t “just stop worrying” because worry isn’t a choice—it’s a biological response driven by a brain trying to protect you. When your mind senses uncertainty or potential threat, the amygdala activates and sends signals that keep you alert, scanning for danger.

 

This makes worry feel automatic, not intentional. On top of that, the more you try to force yourself to stop worrying, the more your brain interprets the situation as unsafe, which actually increases anxious thoughts. Worry becomes a loop: fear triggers more worry, and worry reinforces the fear. Breaking the cycle isn’t about shutting worry off—it’s about calming the nervous system, grounding the body, and teaching the brain that it’s safe enough to relax.

Why Diets Fail

Many diets fail not because people lack willpower, but because they work against the way the brain and body naturally regulate eating. Highly restrictive diets often create feeling s of deprivation. In response, the brain increases hunger signals, cravings and the desire for high-calorie foods. Stress can make this even more challenging. When stress hormones remain elevated, the body may encourage you to seek quick sources of energy, particularly foods high in sugar and fat.

Many people also eat for reasons unrelated to physical hunger, including:

  • Stress

  • Boredom

  • Comfort

  • Habit

  • Celebration

  • Sadness

  • Anxiety

Long-term success usually comes from changing behaviours, thoughts and emotional responses rather than relying solely on restrictive meal plans. Approaches such as mindful eating, emotional awareness, realistic goal setting and hypnotherapy may help people develop healthier relationships with food and create habits that are easier to maintain over time.

Why Emotional Eating Happens

Emotional eating happens when food is used to manage feelings rather than physical hunger.

Many foods, especially those high in sugar or fat, activate the brain's reward system by increasing chemicals such as dopamine. This creates a temporary feeling of comfort or relief. Over time, the brain begins to associate certain emotions with eating.

Sleep and anxiety have a close two-way relationship. When you don't get enough restorative sleep, the parts of the brain responsible for managing emotions become less efficient. At the same time, areas involved in detecting threats become more active.

As a result, you may notice:

  • Increased worrying

  • Feeling more emotionally sensitive

  • Reduced concentration

  • Lower patience

  • More physical tension
