Why Am I Afraid of Making Mistakes?

Understanding perfectionism, judgement and fear of failure

Fear of making mistakes often develops when mistakes become associated with criticism, embarrassment, rejection or failure.
If you have learned that being successful means getting everything right, even a small error can feel disproportionately threatening.
This can create perfectionism, procrastination and avoidance. You may spend excessive amounts of time checking your work or avoid starting something because you are afraid you won't do it perfectly.
The problem is that avoiding mistakes also prevents you from gaining evidence that mistakes can be survived and corrected.
Developing a healthier relationship with mistakes involves recognising that making an error is not the same as being a failure.
Therapeutic approaches, including hypnotherapy, can help explore the emotional beliefs underneath this fear and strengthen greater confidence, flexibility and self-acceptance.
