Why I Offer Havening Technique Over EMDR: A Personal Perspective on Healing from Trauma and PTSD

Healing from trauma and PTSD can feel overwhelming, but there is hope. As someone who has traveled this challenging path, I understand how vital it is to find an effective and compassionate approach. When I began my journey, I explored various therapeutic options, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and Havening Technique. After extensive research and personal experience, I chose to integrate Havening into my practice. Here’s why.

Understanding Trauma and PTSD

Trauma affects everyone differently, creating lasting impacts on emotional wellbeing. The origins can vary from abuse to the loss of a loved one or other distressing experiences. Symptoms of PTSD often include anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional numbness, forming a debilitating chain that can linger for years.

Research indicates that in the UK, nearly about 4 in 100 people are estimated to have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at any given time. This is based on the assumption that 5.3% of people who experience trauma develop PTSD and 7-8% of the U.S. population will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. While many therapies exist to help mitigate these effects, it is crucial to find a method that is not only effective but also gentle and nurturing.

Through my exploration, I encountered EMDR. Although it has benefited many individuals, I identified several limitations that can undermine the healing journey.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a structured therapy that processes traumatic memories through guided eye movements. The theory posits that these movements help the brain reprocess traumatic experiences, reducing emotional distress. However, one significant drawback is that this method often requires patients to recount their traumatic stories in detail, which can be both daunting and emotionally taxing.

When asked to relive painful memories, clients frequently experience heightened anxiety and emotional overwhelm. I witnessed firsthand how these challenges can inhibit the healing process, prompting me to seek alternative methods that could offer solace without the intense emotional load.

What is Havening Technique?

Havening Technique introduces a different approach to healing trauma. Rooted in the principles of sensory input, it combines light touch, focused attention, and positive visualisation to create a calming effect on both mind and body.

This method utilises simple self-soothing techniques that allow individuals to process traumatic memories without the need to recount distressing details. By engaging in comforting actions like gentle self-havening touch—rubbing one’s arms or face—clients promote emotional regulation instead of dwelling on painful memories. This leads to faster recovery and creates a safe, nurturing space suitable for healing.

Why Havening is Better and Faster

From my experience, Havening demonstrates numerous advantages over EMDR for the following reasons:

  1. Gentle Approach: Havening offers a softer touch that fosters a sense of safety. This means individuals can approach their trauma without the intense emotional reliving associated with EMDR. For many clients, this gentleness is essential for building trust and comfort in the healing journey.

  2. Rapid Results: Clients often report significant improvements after just one sessions. A study revealed that 78% of individuals saw reductions in their symptoms after only three Havening sessions. This contrasts sharply with EMDR, which often requires extended times for processing memories.

  3. Focus on Positivity: Unlike EMDR's emphasis on trauma, Havening integrates positive visualisation techniques. Clients concentrate on peaceful imagery, cultivating feelings of safety and empowerment. This positive focus can foster a sense of hope and motivation throughout their healing journey.

  4. Flexibility: Havening can be tailored to each person’s needs, making it a versatile option. This adaptability creates a collaborative environment where clients can explore various techniques that resonate with them.

  5. No Retelling Required: One of Havening's most profound benefits lies in its ability to provide relief without the need to narrate traumatic stories in detail. This eliminates a significant source of emotional distress, promoting a safer and more comfortable atmosphere for healing.

My Experience with Clients

In my practice, clients consistently share feelings of relief and gratitude after experiencing the Havening Technique. Many report feeling a significant alleviation of their symptoms after just a single session. Witnessing these transformations is profoundly rewarding and strengthens my commitment to this approach.

Healing from trauma is deeply personal, and the right therapeutic technique can make all the difference. It is important to remember that recovery is possible, and you are not alone in this journey. Havening provides a compassionate pathway to healing, allowing individuals to reclaim their lives.

Moving Towards Healing From Trauma and PTSD

After exploring both Havening Technique and EMDR, I am convinced that Havening offers a rapiod, more soothing and effective approach to healing trauma and PTSD. The ability to conduct therapy sessions that minimise emotional distress while promoting empowerment creates a nurturing environment, necessary for true emotional restoration.

As an experienced therapist, I understand the struggles that trauma can bring. I encourage you to consider this gentle yet powerful technique as a viable option for your healing journey.
